Matthew Henry Holtzen III, 50, of Fayetteville died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

He was born September 6, 1958, at Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Matthew Henry Holtzen II and Joyce A. Hency Holtzen. He was preceded in death by his father in 1974; paternal grandparents, Matthew and Millie Mickie Holtzen; and maternal grandparents, George C. Hency & Lillian B. McDaniel.

He was a 1976 graduate of Fayetteville High School and attended the University of Arkansas.

He was survived by his mother and stepfather: Joyce A. and James E. Veasey; a brother, George D. Holtzen and his wife, Helen, of Fayetteville; two sisters, Bambi K. Massengale and her husband, Jeffery, of Brentwood, and Heidi J. Nettleship and her husband, Anderson, of West Fork; two nephews and four nieces.

Funeral service were held Thursday, July 23, at Moore’s Chapel. Officiating was Pastor Scott Williams. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery at Brentwood. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005.

michael-jacksonMichael Lynn Jackson, 57, of Fayetteville died March 3, 2015, at Washington Regional Medical Center. He was born October 2, 1957, to Amos and Elnora Jackson Jr.

During his early childhood, he was a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to music and watching movies.

Michael graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1976. He attended Northwest Vo-Tech in Springdale where he earned a Diesel Mechanic Certification. He worked for Jones Truck Lines for several years before joining the U.S. Army and being stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Michael managed his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis for more than 20 years, always maintaining a positive attitude.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Amos Jackson Sr. and Ocie Mae Adams; and maternal grandparents, Preston Sr. and Isabell Lackey. He was survived by his parents, Amos and Elnora Jackson Jr. of Fayetteville; a brother, David L. Jackson and wife, Tracy, of Fayetteville; a sister, Anita Bland, and her husband, Michael, of Columbia, Missouri.; great aunts, Margaret Smith and Dorothy Barker Wilkes, both of Fayetteville; and Rosie Lee Cravens of Fort Smith; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and caring caring friends.

Funeral services were March 11, 2015, at Beard’s Chapel with Steve West officiating. Interment followed in the Fayetteville National Cemetery under the direction of Beard’s Chapel.

Obituary for Craig Venema

craig-venemaCraig Douglas Venema, 34, died May 10, 1993, at Houston, Texas, from complications related to AIDS. He was born July 11, 1958, at Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Dr. Clare and Marleen McKeehan Venema.

His family moved to Fayetteville in 1961. He was a 1976 graduate of Fayetteville High School and attended the University of Arkansas before moving to Houston in 1981. In 1983, he began working with multiple-disability people at Houston’s Lighthouse for the Blind and Deaf as a classroom instructor and job coach. In 1990, he left Lighthouse to work with Laurie Johnson’s Rehabilitation Management Services. He continued to volunteer there until he could no longer work full time. He attended Unity Church of Houston.

Survivors included his parents of Fayetteville; his brother Chris Venema of Fayetteville; his sisters, Kim Puckett of Fayetteville, Karen Hunter of Woodruff, Wisconsin, and Kathryn Turner of Charlotte, North Carolina; his paternal grandfather, Clare Venema Sr., of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three nieces and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service was held at Unity Church in Houston. A local service was held at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, with Dr. Jere Mitchell and Dr. Andrew Hall officiating.

Obituary for Steve ‘Country’ Jones

Stephen Joe “Country” Jones, 20, died May 7, 1977, in a one-vehicle car accident at the intersection of Wedington Drive and Ray Avenue. He was born Oct. 11, 1957, at Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Joe C. and Daisy Workman Jones.

He was a 1976 graduate of Fayetteville High School and was an employee of Dillon’s Food Stores at the time of his death.

He was survived by his parents of Fayetteville; a brother, Kenny, and a sister, Ladena, both of the home; his paternal grandfather, Lafayette Jones, of Fayetteville; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Workman of Cane Hill.

Services were held May 10 at Moore’s Funeral Home with burial at Liberty Hill Cemetery near Evansville.

Obituary for Myra Wesson

Myra Rebecca Wesson, 44, died February 6, 2003, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born August 25, 1958, at Crossett, Ark., the daughter of Doyle and Margaret (Gandy) Wesson.

During her childhood, Myra’s family lived in several areas in Arkansas and Louisiana as her father served in the ministry. She graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1976 and began working in car sales. Later she moved to Kentucky where she began her career in the construction industry, painting the interior of new homes and also working in renovation of existing homes. After a series of health problems, she moved to Urbana, Missouri, in August of 2002 to be near her parents and her sister.

She was a vibrant person who loved life. She enjoyed fishing, camping and amusement parks, but best of all she loved children, especially her nieces and nephews. Big family gatherings were always a treat for her, especially at Christmas time. She was also known for her outdoor cooking, especially her steaks. She was of the Baptist faith for her entire life and her most recent membership was in the Pomme de Terre Southern Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; and two great-nephews.

Survivors included her parents, the Rev. Doyle and Margaret Wesson of Urbana; one brother, Phil and wife, Sharon Wesson, of Mountain View, Ark.; one sister, Wanda and husband, Fred Holland, of Urbana; special friend, Earlene Ellis, of Urbana; three nephews; one niece; two great-nephews; and six great-nieces; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members and friends to mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held Feb. 10 in the Cantlon Otterness Funeral Chapel with Brother Gary Pridemore and Brother Roger Haney officiating. The Holland and Wesson families provided the music service. Burial was in the Bower Chapel Cemetery near Urbana and under the direction of the Cantlon Otterness Funeral Home of Urbana. Escorts were Mark and Chad Holland, Jeremy, David and Keith Wesson, Brad McVickers and Curtis Owens.

 

 

Obituary for Bobby Waterson

robert-watersonRobert Lewis “Bobby” Waterson died August 12, 2014 in Edmond, Oklahoma, at the age of 57. He was born May 20, 1957, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Robert Lee and Mary Margaret Digiacomo Waterson.

Waterson proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years. He worked for the city of Edmond Electric Department for 34 years. He coached Little League basketball and t-ball. He enjoyed hunting with his son, Wesley, and taking his granddaughter, Audrey, camping. Bob was very proud of his daughter, Jessica, when she became a teacher. He was a handy man to family and friends and enjoyed watching football and basketball, especially Arkansas Razorbacks and OKC Thunder.

Bob was survived by his wife of 30 years, Betty (McWilliams) of the home; his daughter, Jessica, and her husband, William Fish, of Wellston, Oklahoma; his son, Wesley Waterson of the home; his granddaughter, Audrey Fish, and a grandson on the way; his parents; siblings, Linda Scheffe and her husband Bob, Steven Wiseman, Pam Walker and her husband David, Michael Waterson, Sandra Flatt and her husband Mickey.

A funeral was held Saturday, August 16, 2014, at the Wellston Assembly of God Church with interment following in the Wellston Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.

Obituary for Sheri Starr Keen

Sheri-Starr-KeenSheri Lynne Starr Keen, 56, died on March 16, 2015, from Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Friday, June 13, 1958, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Jon Larry Starr and Barbara Starr Roberts.

Sheri was a dedicated employee of Proctor and Gamble, Coty Cosmetics, L’Oreal Cosmetics, Computer Resources and the Howell Trumbo Company.

For many years Sheri volunteered at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. She pursued her passion for animals by investigating and rescuing many abused dogs, cats and horses. Many of these animals were blessed to go home with her.

The family appreciates the loving care by her caregivers, Carin Stanberry Evans and Karen Keith, during her illness.

Sheri was predeceased by her sister, Lori Anne Starr, and her grandparents, James Paul and Colleen Harrell Byerly, and Fred and Florence Clark Starr.

She was survived by her son, Taylor, and his father, John Keen; her parents, of Fayetteville; her brother, Larry Starr, of Little Rock; and many loving family members and dear friends.

A celebration of life for Sheri was held at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville on March 20. The service was officiated by Dr. Reverend Steve Pulliam.

Obituary for Jimmy Stout

Odie Jimmy Stout died Feb. 16, 2007. He was born May 16, 1958, in Zama, Japan, the son of Odie and Iruko Sato Stout.

He was a 1976 graduate of Fayetteville High School. He held the rank of Specialist 4 in the U.S. Army.

He was survived by his mother; a brother, Jay Stout of Fayetteville; two sisters, Ginny Corken and her husband, Jerry, of Springdale, and Lorraine Hamilton and her husband, Tim, of Chester, Virginia, and more family.

His ashes are interred at the National Cemetery at Fayetteville.

Obituary for Angela West Lies

angela-west-liesAngela M. (West) Lies, 55, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013. She was born Dec. 13, 1957, to Sarge and Shirley (Newton) West in Fort Smith, Ark.; the second of six children.

Angela married Larry Lies in Wichita, Kansas, on May 25, 1985, and they had three children. She attended Kansas State University. Angela worked at JC Penney’s for 18 years as a customer service representative. She was a member of Chisholm Trail Church of Christ. Angela enjoyed cleaning, shopping and spending time with family.

Survivors included her husband, Larry; children, Cheryl (Rob) Longan, Ariel Lies and Omar Rivera, and Taylor Lies; grandchildren, Devin Longan and Jace Longan; and siblings, Charles West, Tony West, Joseph (Robin) West, Luke West, and Anna Allen.

A memorial service was held July 20 at the Combs Street Church of Christ, Fayetteville.

Obituary for Nancy Dodson Peters

Nancy Dodson Peters, 39, of Denton, Texas, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Denton Community Hospital. She was born September 25, 1958, in Little Rock, the daughter of Dr. Dwight and Nancy Sue (Allen) Dodson.

She graduated Fayetteville High School and attended the University of Arkansas. She was a member of Moms in Touch; vice president of PTA at Sam Houston; Campus Leader Team at Calhoun Middle School, and a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was a homemaker and a mother.

Visitation was May 5 at Mulkey-Mason/Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home. Memorial service was Wednesday, May 6, at Denton Bible Church with Rev. Tom Nelson officiating.

Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Allen Dodson, Charles Dodson, Jack Swanson, Ron Swanson, Rob Mourton, Jim Peters.

Survivors included her husband, Tim W. Peters of Denton; three daughters, Stefanie, Lauren and Kendall of Denton; her parents, Nancy and Dwight Dodson of Fayetteville; two sisters, Lee Ann Stacpoole of Gainesville, Florida, Dana Dykman of Fayetteville; two brothers, Allen Dodson and Charles Dodson, both of Fayetteville; and many nieces and nephews.
