But in the eyes of Mu Alpha Theta sponsor, Mrs. Marian Crum, the club was organized “to recognize and encourage outstanding work or scholarship in mathematics.”

At the annual Christmas part, Barbara Leeton was crowned “Sprouts” champion. “Sprouts” is a complicated dot-to-dot game of skill, logic and a bit of luck.

On the agenda for Mu Alpha Theta members in ’75-’76 was a field trip to Tulsa to visit the American Airlines Maintenance Center and Oral Roberts University. The group received reduced rates on Texas Instruments calculators, purchased a new calculator for the advanced math classes and attended the national convention in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Band students work on their music shelves.

Work day provided students with a choice of going to school and getting paint and dirt all over them or staying in their warm beds and sleeping late.

Most of the approximately 215 students who did work arrived by noon. The largest crowd of the day gathered in the cafeteria at lunch for pizza paid for by the administration and Pepsi provided by Student Council.

“I’m always impressed with students that show their concern in such a positive way,” said Mrs. Sherry Price, Student Council sponsor.

Among the individual improvements was a fresh coat of blue paint in the accounting room. The band room was given a Bicentennial look, and the girls’ dressing room took on a brighter appearance as Mrs. Carol Brunner’s work team painted desks, trash cans, benches and the door.

The major clean up consisted of wiping away the cobwebs and grime that had accumulated since the last work day. But probably the biggest clean up of the day took place after all the workers got home and took a look at themselves.

Blah Busters

School getting you down? Tired of class after class after class of lectures? All students seemed to feel this way at one time or another, but after 12 years the seniors of ’76 came up with some exciting ways to “beat the blahs.”

For banjo picker Robert Meyer and guitar player Fred McClain, it was playing “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” in English study hall.

Hugh Painter, Phil Goff and Charlie Alison could be found around the school doing card tricks and magic.

“I like to practice magic. It’s loads of fun,” bubbled Phil.

A royal flush makes a big hand for the study hall clan who play poker. It's also a good hand when playing Spades or Hearts.

Other seniors relaxed by reading, talking, singing, drawing and playing cards. Terry Reed found enjoyment in “just being with friends.”

So next time a large group gets you depressed or you make a D on your algebra test, try some of the seniors’ ideas on bustin’ the blahs. After all, they had 12 years of practice.
