Barry Richard Gilbow, age 66, died September 16, 2024, in Eureka Springs, Ark.

He and his twin brother, Jerry Gilbow, were born in 1957 in Jonesboro, Ark., to Lonnie and Billie Gilbow.

Barry grew up in Fayetteville and graduated from Fayetteville High school in 1976. He attended the University of Arkansas and later started businesses in Houston, Texas; Tulsa, Okla., and Fayetteville. He was an avid golfer and was interested in aviation and flew small aircraft.

Barry was baptized by Dr. H.D. McCarty at University Baptist Church in Fayetteville as a young man and confessed Jesus as Lord.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, Jerry, and his older brother, Jackie.

He is survived by his sons, Cody, and Lonnie, and daughter, Brie, and one grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Baker, and her husband John, and many nieces and nephews.

During the 1975-76 school year, university students in the creative writing program at the University of Arkansas taught elementary and secondary students across the state about poetry and various approaches to writing poems. The outreach program was known at Poetry in the Schools, or PITS for short.

From the writing, several poems from each school were chosen for publication, including more than a dozen written by seniors in the Class of 76. The attached PDF only contains the forward, introduction and poetry from FHS and the PitStop School in Fayetteville.

Today, the program is known as Writers in the Schools, or WITS, and continues to foster creative writing in schools across the state.
